God’s Word is an instrument of His redeeming work. Unless we can identify the redemptive purpose of the text, it becomes possible to use the Bible in an unchristian way—to say the right thing but send the wrong message. The Scripture is more than just a code of ethics or morality. Our fallen human condition renders us incapable of the perfect obedience required. Even our best efforts are tainted by our fallen humanity. God has revealed in Christ what is necessary to meet the needs of our human deficiency. The Scripture addresses every aspect of redemption in Christ. The grid of Covenant Theology aids in maintaining the Christ-focus that is essential for the proper interpretation and application of the message. As Geerhardus Vos said, “Revelation is separably linked to the activity of redemption…Revelation is the interpretation of redemption.”
